Where is Muktinath Temple?

Muktinath temple is located at an altitude of 3780m from sea level on the lap of the mountain in the Ranipouwa village of Mustang district. The pagoda style temple is surrounded by 108 stone waterspouts (Mukti Dhara) where pilgrims take holy baths. There are two ponds just in front of the temple where pilgrims take a holy dip. An eternal fire (Jwala Mai temple) is also situated within the temple premises.

Significance of Muktinath Temple

The temple has enormous religious as well as cultural significance within Hindu and Buddhist followers. It’s the symbol of religious harmony, where both of the pilgrims respect each other.

Religious Significance

The temple is the place of liberation for Hinduism, the only Divya Desam outside of India. Buddhists believe it to be the dwelling of the goddess Dakinis (Sky Dancers) and the Avalokiteshvara, who is believed to be the most compassionate Buddha among all buddhas. Having a holy bath at 108 waterspouts washes away your sins from present and previous births. The religious significance and importance of the temple attract thousands of pilgrims from across the world.

Cultural Significance

Muktinath temple is also culturally important among locals. The locals pay a visit during various festival occasions. People worship the deity with an open and wise heart.

Major Attractions

Muktinath tour packages won’t just take you to the Muktinath temple alone. But they also give you an opportunity to explore natural and pilgrimage attractions across the lower Mustang area. Pilgrims can explore the following things during their Muktinath tour packages:

Muktinath Temple

Muktinath temple is recognized as the place of liberation. It’s worshiped by Hindus and Buddhists. The sacred shrine is also considered Gandaki Shakti Peeth. The eternal flame at Muktinath is worshipped by Buddhists as the embodiment of the Avalokiteshvara.

Kaligandaki River

The Kaligandaki river is another attraction of the Muktinath trip. This river is especially famous for having Shaligrams (fossilized ammonite stones). Hindus worship Shaligrams as a form of Lord Vishnu. Pilgrims want to touch the river, take holy baths and search for the stone by themselves.

Kagbeni

Kagbeni is another key spot where pilgrims stop for Pitri-Puja or rituals that are performed for ancestral salvation. The location where two rivers, Kali Gandaki and Krishna Gandaki, meet together is considered Pitru Moksastala.

Lower Mustang

The lower area of Mustang would be the best natural attraction of the Muktinath trip. Travelers can explore some of the popular low alpine lakes, such as Dumba and Titi. A range of pine forest landscapes would catch your eyes. The white waterfalls from the green hills would amaze your heart. Tourists can get close to mountain settlement, people and culture. Most importantly, the close view of mountains will blow you away. Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri can be seen from Muktinath during the trip.

How to reach Muktinath

Reaching Muktinath is much easier nowadays compared to before. Travelers can reach Muktinath either by drive or flight. The drive option is quite reasonable in price compared to the flight.

By Drive

Getting to the Muktinath temple by road takes around 6 hours driving from Pokhara. Before, it used to take about 10/12 hours of duration. The driving distance from Pokhara to Muktinath temple is around 180 KM. Most of the road has been well maintained, but during the monsoon season people may face landslide issues. To prevent the road disturbance, visitors can check the weather update and road situation. People mostly use the 4WD vehicle due to the high alpine terrain and to avoid performance issues.

A walk is required from the vehicle parking to the temple; the distance is around 1.7 KM. Two-thirds of the road is flat, but the remainder are the steps to climb. Pony or Palki (with additional cost) is available for those who can't walk.

By Flight

Besides the drive, the flight option is also available to reach Muktinath. A regularly scheduled flight operates from Pokhara to Jomsom, 20 minutes of the flight duration. After Jomsom, you have to drive again to Muktinath, about 40 minutes. These scheduled flights only operate during the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons. For those who can’t drive or prefer a luxurious option, they can charter a helicopter either from Pokhara or Kathmandu to reach just close to Muktinath temple.
